About Us


Action physio opened in Athlone with the aim of providing a quality and private physiotherapy and sports injury service to Athlone and the surrounding community. We specialise in the treatment sporting injury and musculoskeletal disorders.

The clinic is purpose built and has disabled access via lift, with ample parking facilities. There is a fully equipped rehabilitation gym and individual treatment rooms for individual and private assessment.

 

Our Therapists

Keith Fox MISCP, MCSP

Keith qualified as a chartered physiotherapist in 2000 from Liverpool University with a first class honours degree in physiotherapy. He gained a post graduate diploma in Sports Injury and Management in 2003 from Manchester Metropolitan University. Keith spent six years working in England where he worked with Crewe Alexandra Football Club and more recently Coventry City Football Club. He has also worked with continental professional cycling teams in Belgium and France. Since returning to Ireland in January 2006 he has been working with St Bridgits Gaelic Football Team and Garrycastle Gaelic Football team.


Helen Taylor MISCP, MSCP

Helen is a fully licensed and practicing chartered physiotherapist. She is one of the co-founding partners of Action Physio. Prior to founding Action Physio, Helen worked in the UK at a specialist orthopaedic teaching hospital where she gained valuable experience in post-operative orthopaedic care and general musculoskeletal disorders. Since co-founding Action Physio in 2006 Helen has worked within the clinic and with local sporting teams and gained a post-graduate diploma in Science of Sports Injury. She is currently working towards completion of her Masters. Besides extensive orthopaedic and musculoskeletal experience, she has recently retrained in women's health to included incontinence treatment and ante-natal and post-natal care. Her other interests include Pilates and acupuncture.


David Hanly MISCP

David qualified with an honours degree in physiotherapy from University College Dublin in 2003. After 3 years working in the HSE, he joined Action Physio in June 2006. Since then he has worked mainly in the area of musculoskeletal and sports injuries and has attained further qualifications in maual therapy and dry needling. Aside from his time at the clinic, David currently works as a senior physiotherapist with the Connacht rugby squad, the Galway senior football team and the Ireland U-18 rugby squad.


Elaine Raftery MISCP

Elaine Raftery has been practising as a Chartered Physiotherapist since 2007. Elaine obtained her BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy degree from Trinity College Dublin after initially completing a BSc (Hons) degree in Science (Anatomy) from the National University in Ireland, Galway. Since qualifying Elaine began building her experience in the public sector in Portiuncla Hospital, Ballinasloe. She has experience in Musculoskeletal, Neurology, Respiratory and Care of the Elderly. In addition to this, Elaine has also worked with a number of GAA teams over the last few years providing pitch-side cover. Also she has worked as Team Physiotherapist with Connacht U-16 Girls Hockey team for the Interpros in 2007 and the Connacht U-18 Girls for the 2008 Interpros. She has also attended the European Championships with the Irish U-18 Girls Hckey Team in Belgium in 2009. She was Team Physiotherapist for the Roscommon Minors Football team in 2010. At present, Elaine is currently the Chairperson for the clinical interest group Chartered Physiotherapists in Sports and Exercise Medicine (CPSEM), the largest specialist interest group within the ISCP with almost 500 members. She has been involved with this committee since 2009. Elaine's current areas of interest include sports injuries, musculoskeletal and occupational injuries, back pain and myofascial trigger point therapy.


David Kelly MISCP

David graduated from University of Limerick in 2000, with a BSc in Sports and Exercise Science before pursuing a BSc in Physiotherapy in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Since qualifying in 2003 David has worked locally with the HSE. He was promoted to Senior Physiotherapist in 2006. David has represented Roscommon GAA at U-18, U-21 and Senior Football. He plays locally with club side Clann na nGael. His main areas of interest include: Musculoskeletal Injury, Tendonopathies, Chroic Injury, Muscle Imbalance and GAA Player Burnout


Patrick Kelly MISCP

Patrick graduated from the N.U.I., Galway with BSc (Hons) Science and from the University of Teeside in 2006 with a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy. Since returning to Ireland he has worked in the HSE and private practice with several sports teams, including Salthill Devon Football Club and Corofin Gaelic Football Team. His clinical interests include Manual Therapy and Myofascial Trigger point therapy with the use of Dry Needling.


Declan Donoghue MISCP

Declan graduated with a BSc (Hons) in physiotherapy from Trinity College Dublin in 2007 before going on to work in St James Hospital, Dublin. He then returned to TCD to complete and MSc in neuroscience in 2008. He has worked for the HSE in Dublin-Mid Leinster based in both Athlone and Mullingar since 2008. He has worked in neuromusculoskeletal private practice for the past two years locally in Athlone. Declan has volunteered his skills in South Africa, Moldova and more recently in Haiti helping to rehabilitate earthquake survivors. In the past he has represented Connacht rugby at schoolboy level and more recently summited Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa. Through his experience and further education and training he has developed interests in the area of neuromusculoskeletal rehabilitation, exercise therapy including sports specific rehab, the pain mechanisms behind chronic pain, myofascial trigger point therapy and nerological assessment and treatment.
